Fascinating Things

Three things that have no connection, but that have entertained me in the past 24 hours:

1. That heralded NYC honesty...

via jschumacher at flickr

2. That renowned Hollywood DIS-honesty...

via Jezebel

3. And an inspirational story about the relentless stamina of the human spirit -- Mark Malkoff visited all 171 of the Starbucks stores in Manhattan, to the tune of $369.14. See the highlights video here... it's funny, so it will only feel like 3 minutes, plus there is a cameo by Cousin Larry. Remember Cousin Larry?

Coming this fall...

Coming this fall to a city near you: ME!

I'm booking for the fall right now. I'll be doing speaking engagements and concerts, or even both at once! I'm not sure yet where I'll be headed, as that depends on who calls me and says, "Come play!" I almost always do what I'm told in regards to that. Just give me a where and a when, God will make the how, and I'll be the what.

The general idea is to be in these places, although I'm totally open to adding others in there:

August: MA, PA, TN, VA, and FL
September: FL, NJ, CT, NH, KY, and NY
October: SC, TN, OR, WA, CA
November: TX
December: You name it! How about Hawaii... hmmm??

Also, I've decided to implement a new thing at the merch table this fall (inspired by Seth Godin). If you buy $10 or more in merchandise, you can challenge me to game of Paper/Rock/Scissors. If you beat me, I will take $1 off your total cost. If I win, I get to live the rest of my life feeling superior to you. Is that a good trade? Hah! Kidding!

Let me know if you want me to play and/or speak somewhere, including but not limited to: church, college, coffee shop, venue, backyard, YoungLife club meeting, InterVarsity, Campus Crusade, BSU, BCM, FCA, Wesley Foundation, sorority, fraternity, women's group, youth group, fundraiser, or living room. I look forward to seeing you guys out there on the road!

Here is what to do if you know of a place that can bring me in to play. Call 615-504-1549 or email booking at taraleighcobble with the dot followed by the com. It's pretty simple. Yippee!

Have a stellar day,

Just When I Thought It Was Safe To Go Back Into The Garage...

*
This is maybe the most absurd thing I've read in a long time, but it actually doesn't shock me.
And people ask me why I park on the street....

Set your TiVo, DVR, VCR, SunDial, etc.

I've been a bit delinquent about posting when my episode of "We Live Here: Uploaded" is going to air on the Fine Living Network, but it's for a good reason: I wanted to see the episode personally before I parade it in front of all of you people who can judge me. Hah!

So here is a schedule of the upcoming air times. My segment occurs about 8 minutes in, so if you tune in late, you'll still get me. Mostly it's Saturday nights @ 9:30 PM and then three hours later (at 12:30 AM early Sunday morning), although there's a Sunday night / Monday morning episode scheduled to air.

I don't know what channel the Fine Living network is in your town (or even if you get it), but I'm sure you can scroll through your Guide or go to the Fine Living website to check.

If you actually do see it, be sure to let me know!

Dundies!

I got the first video from Alisa, who says, "Lobster, Cheeseburger... it's all relative."

Then I was prompted to search on YouTube for any other mashups of NBC'S "The Office" and songs from "Veggie Tales." These are truly splendid. If you are/were a VT fan who happens to now also watch The Office, you can thank me later.

Independence Day!

Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. I'm lucky if I can make it through the fireworks without crying. I'm happy to report that I only cried during the "Star-Spangled Banner" last night, and partially because no one at my party seemed to know the words. They half-sung phrases from other parts of the song. They were "rockets red glaring" long before the "perilous fight" even started.

Anyway, here are some shots from the party I attended on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Next year I will probably try to grab a spot on the FDR, because they shut down the whole highway for people to sit in lawn chairs and watch the fireworks over the East River. Or I might go to Brooklyn so I can have the view of Manhattan's Chrysler Building and Empire State Building as the backdrop to the fireworks across the water.

First things first. Erin loved that this apartment building had a wall-mounted Rascal. Although she declined to ride it up. (Hah! Declined! Accidental pun.)

Jon Zungre wore his sister's socks. You may remember her (Stephanie Zungre) from last week's blog where I recounted her demise. The socks are yellow with pale blue and green geometric shapes. Nifty. Also, lest you think that hairy arm belongs to me, it does not.

And I'm sorry to report that my camera died just as I was about to take what would have surely been The Greatest Photos Of All Time. Here is what I managed in the final moments of the life of my battery.

Despite my failed attempt at Photojournalist Stardom, here is what actually took place last night in the skies of New York City. I am not shrinking these because they are worth it.

They always synchronize the show to the songs they're playing on the radio. These smiley faces came during the last line of this section of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."

The colors of a rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by.

This year NYC had something exciting for the first time ever: waterworks! According to Gothamist they're actually called "Nautical Mines." It's where they fire pyrotechnics into the water instead of the sky. Check it out!

If you ever get a chance to catch the Macy's Independence Day fireworks display, I highly recommend it. Not to brag (okay, yes), but the NY Sun said that NYC has 55 times the explosions of any other city in America. The average city's show includes 500, whereas ours has over 1300 in the first minute. This year the show had 40,000. I personally only counted 37,000, but I suppose I trust the paper for the accurate number.

Happy independence,

100%

Yes. I finished the first draft of the book, only one day behind schedule. And since I've been working with my editors on a chapter-by-chapter basis, I'm actually almost done with the second draft as well. I have five more chapters to go before I will cross that mark. I'm super excited, you guys!

Anyway, here are some pictures from the past few days.

Meet Sam. The Burninator.
(I should add that he was smoking hookah -- legal yet not something that we endorse.)

The first thing I did when I finished writing the book was to snap this shot. It's the table by the door at Doma, where I wrote most of the book.

BJ Novak (a.k.a. Ryan from NBC's "The Office") was at UCB tonight. The place was filled to capacity so we ended up with seats on the side. Boo. Sorry for the lousy shots.

Here is some footage of Aziz Ansari from that night. If you see Aziz live and he performs this bit, you have to promise to laugh at it again. I don't want to be The Joke Spoiler. (If you can't view it, try again in an hour. Sometimes YouTube is slow on the uptake.)

Well my friends, I'm off to enjoy a cloudy Independence Day in New York City... my prayers are for our leadership, our troops, and our future.

Much love,

iPhone, MoMA, eTC.

Dear friends,

I am 91% done with the first draft of the new book (based on my word count goal). I hope to finish the rest today... we'll see. I eventually may ask you to vote on your favorite title. I have my favorite, but I've also been keeping a few others in my back pocket just in case.

Here are some photos from the past few days. I'm trying to be better about posting the photos regularly, because when I have to do the long blogs those are such beasts! Besides, I'm parking my car right now, so it's perfect timing... I'm just sitting in my car for 90 minutes.

Ooh, nature! In New York City!

I also stumbled across this peace garden on E. 52nd Street. Preee-teee.

My friends wanted to go to the Met game + I wanted to hang out with my friends = I ended up at a Met game. Unfortunate math.

We had to ride the train forever to get there. Aaagh. Seriously it was a 50-minute ride during rush hour, standing smashed up against strangers. After 45 minutes, the train cleared out enough that we were finally able to get seats. I now have a great deal of sympathy for the daily commuters from the outer boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx).

International iPhone Day! I didn't get one, but I did swing by the Fifth Avenue Apple Store to see the madness. People started lining up on Monday, and today they had to rope off a lane of Fifth Ave to accommodate all the people. The line has cleared a lot in this photo, because it was 8:30pm and a lot of people had moved through already.

I also took a 14-second video of the employees clapping for people as they walked out of the store. This would be a good job for a former cheerleader, because they had to be enthusiastic like this for hours.

The Museum of Modern Art is free on Fridays from 4-8pm, so I went by to check out the Richard Serra exhibit.

Here's a distant picture so you can see how yoooge it is. This is actually one of the smaller pieces in the exhibit.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I grabbed some shots of my favorite pieces throughout the MoMA. I am pretty sure it was okay for me to take these pictures because:

A) Everyone else was taking pictures.
B) There was a guard in every room while I was taking the pictures.
C) No one tackled me.

Behold: giant wall with writing on it. Can't remember the artist's name. Lots of social and political commentary... wish I had a closeup.

Then I met up with Amanda in the park while she was walking the dog voted Most Likely To Make Everyone Stop And Ask Questions and/or Want To Take Photos. It's an Afghan Hound and it has to wear that hood and those leggings to keep its long hair from getting all tangled up in stuff.

Ferris Bueller, you're my hero.

Went to hang out in the park with some friends and came across these people dancing. It seemed like an event more than a happy coincidence, but you never know.

Here is a 14-second video of it. I seem to prefer filming 14-second clips. Who knew? By the way, there is some guy laughing freakishly at the end. I don't know who he is. If it's you, I'm sorry for saying you have a freakish laugh, but I'm sure you've heard it before.

Then Sam shared a meaningful gaze with Nicholas the Dog.

Sometimes I feel weird about having random strangers as my Photo-A-Day, but this made me laugh. I was sitting at the Starbucks at 70th & Broadway when I saw this.

I'm off to write now... I hope to have some good news to report tomorrow!

Have a stellar day,
